Outdoor Photographer July 2007

Runner Up: People In The Landscape.

Tourists with umbrellas on the steps at the City Gates in Xian, China. The weather grey, the light was flat, the rain was insistent, and there are surprisingly few red umbrellas in Xian. This is especially true when you need one to walk into a shot that you've seen since you arrived at the location.

There was a definite sense of satisfaction and "it-all-coming-together" when Miss Red Umbrella finally arrived.

As I said on Flickr, this image is flipped horizontally from the original as it feels more optimistic that way.

Angles and Umbrellas
The original image still works but your eye seems to bounce back up the steps as you follow the diagonal down and meet Mrs Blue Umbrella. I guess this is our western sensibilities prefering to read reading image from left to right.

To be honest I'd nearly forgotten about this competition when the kind people at OP send me a copy. I didn't win but it is at the top of the runner's up page ;o)

And, it's nice to be in print again.
